Delicious, classic apple streusel.

Ingredients
  • 5 cups peeled apples sliced thin
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • ¾ tsp cinnamon
  • ⅛ tsp nutmeg
  • ⅛ tsp allspice
  • 1 unbaked pie crust
  • TOPPING:
  • ½ cup flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup quick oats
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ cup Earth Balance baking sticks (or other vegan 'butter') at room temperature
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 425 (220 C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, mix the sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice.
  3. Add the sliced apple and toss well to coat.
  4. Spoon this mix into the pie shell.
  5. Topping:
  6. In a separate bowl mix together the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and oats.
  7. Add the 'butter' and use a pastry blender until coarse/crumbly.
  8. Sprinkle this evenly over the apple filling.
  9. Bake on the lower third of the oven at 425 F (220 C) for 15 minutes.
  10. Reduce to 350 and bake for about 35 minutes more until apples are soft and topping is golden brown.
  11. Test apples to make sure they are soft with the tip of a pointed sharp knife.
  12. Cover loosely with foil if the top is browning too quickly.
  13. Remove from oven and let it cool slightly.
  14. Serve with or without ice cream.
