This is the perfect sweet treat to end your meal or impress your guests. Fresh apples, the perfect blend of spices, and a gooey filling all covered with a delicious sweet, cinnamon oatmeal crumble.
When my husband’s birthday rolls around each year, he doesn’t ask for cake. He wants this apple streusel. (He likes to complicate things with this request as it seems that most years we are away camping at that time, but whatever, we make it work;).
Preheat your oven to 425 (220 C). In a large mixing bowl, mix the sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. Add the sliced apple and toss well to coat. Spoon this mix into the pie shell.
For the topping: In a separate bowl mix together the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and oats. Add the ‘butter’ and use a pastry blender until coarse/crumbly. Sprinkle this evenly over the apple filling.
Bake on the lower third of the oven at 425 F (220 C) for 15 minutes. Reduce to 350 and bake for about 35 minutes more until apples are soft and topping is golden brown. Test the apples to make sure they are soft with the tip of a pointed sharp knife. Cover loosely with foil if the top begins to brown too quickly. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. Serve with or without ice cream!
